Day 1: Thursday Arrival Day

Arrive in Istanbul Airport and transfer to the hotel. Overnight at your hotel in Istanbul

Day 2: Friday Bosphorus And Trendy Districts In Old City

Breakfast at the hotel and meet with your guide in the hotel lobby for the sightseeing tour. Lunch and dinner at leisure and overnight stay in Istanbul. This fun and cultural excursion begins in the morning. BOSPHORUS CRUISE Take a boat trip on the Bosphorus. It separates Asia and Europe and connects the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea. Along the strait and on both shores, discover the marble palaces of Dolmabahce and Beylerbeyi, the beautiful Ottoman wooden villas called "yali" (waterside residences), and medieval fortresses. THE GOLDEN HORN AND THE TRENDY DISTRICT The Golden Horn was a natural harbor developed by Greek colonists to form the city of Byzantium. Under the Byzantine Empire, shipyards were established there, and a defensive wall along the shore protected the city from naval attacks. We will begin our visits. The Eyüp Mosque is the holiest mosque in Istanbul; indeed, after Mecca and Jerusalem, it is perhaps the third holiest pilgrimage site in the Islamic world. Then we'll stop at Pierre Loti Hill for a photo break. Folklore has it that the writer Pierre Loti (1850-1923) was a regular at the teahouse nestled among the plane and cypress trees atop Eyüp Cemetery. The teahouse is still open today, and the excellent view can be enjoyed with a cup of tea and the traditional or famous Shishah (water pipe) (at an extra cost). We'll continue to the bohemian district and visit the Bulgarian Church (St. Stefan); this iron church belongs to the Bulgarian minority and is one of the most interesting churches in Istanbul. We'll then continue to the Balat district, a bohemian area with colorful wooden houses, auction cafes, churches, synagogues, and vintage shops. During this walk, we will also visit the Ecumenical Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Church of St. George, one of the supreme repositories of religious authority for hundreds of millions of Orthodox Christians worldwide. Return to the hotel.

Day 3: Saturday Ottoman And Byzantine Highlights

We will attempt to follow the Byzantine stone route from the Million to the Hagia Sophia. The Million (Greek: Μίλιον or Μίλλιον) is a monument in Constantinople that once marked the starting point for distances on all roads leading to the cities of the Byzantine Empire. It served the same purpose as the Golden Milestone in Rome. We will pass by the Palace of Ibrahim Pasha, the Calche, the Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpent Column, the Hippodrome, the Cistern, the Sphenodon, and the Sergius Bacchus (Little Hagia Sophia). Exterior view of the magnificent Hagia Sophia. It was once the spiritual heart of the ancient Byzantine Empire. Hagia Sophia, which was to remain the largest church in the world until the completion of Seville Cathedral, is one of the greatest examples of Byzantine architecture. OPTIONAL: Entrance to the Hagia Sophia Mosque €25 per person. Visit to the Blue Mosque, an architectural masterpiece renowned for its exquisite blue tiles and six elegant minarets. It is the only mosque in the world with six minarets forming a unified whole against the city skyline. Then discover the Roman Hippodrome with the Theodosius II obelisk, the Serpent Column, and the German Fountain. View the exterior of the famous Topkapi Palace. This palace was the first Ottoman palace in Istanbul. Unlike European palaces, Topkapi is not a single monumental structure, but a complex composed of several kiosks, gardens, and areas spread across the tip of the historical peninsula at the entrance to the Golden Horn. OPTIONAL: Entrance to the palace with the treasury rooms; sacred relics and the Harem of Saint Irene = €75 per person. Then stroll through the Arasta Bazaar, a lively traditional market lined with small shops selling spices, pottery, carpets, and souvenirs. Visit leather shops and Turkish delight ("Lokum"). Transfer back to the hotel.
